The other Abuser In Chief.
The liberal media will never effectively attack Trump until it reckons with its love affair with Bill Clinton.
There’s a strange amnesia on the liberal left when it comes to Bill Clinton. We remember the charisma. The saxophone. The economic boom years. We remember how he “fought the Republicans.”
How he was impeached over sex, and “won.”
But we forget the wreckage. We forget the women. We forget the betrayals.
Worse, we excuse them.
And because we did—for decades—we handed the modern right its greatest weapon. When Donald Trump dragged Juanita Broaddrick, Paula Jones, and Kathleen Willey into the second presidential debate in 2016, it was a grotesque, cynical move.
But it worked. Not just because it derailed Hillary Clinton.
Not just because it stirred the culture war.
But because it exposed something deeply rotten in the liberal establishment. Something no MSNBC panel, no New York Times editorial, no Jon Stewart monologue could explain away.
The truth is this: Bill Clinton is not a moral man. He was not then. He is not now. And the left’s refusal to confront that fact helped erode the very foundations it now tries to stand on.
Let’s put it plainly: the allegations against Bill Clinton are horrifying.
Juanita Broaddrick has consistently claimed he raped her in the 1970s. Kathleen Willey accused him of sexual assault in the White House. Paula Jones brought a lawsuit detailing a grotesque display of power and indecency.
And Monica Lewinsky? The only thing separating what happened to her from a scandal at Fox News is the party affiliation of the man at the centre of it.
She was a 22-year-old intern. He was the most powerful man on Earth. He lied. He used her. Then he left her to be destroyed.
What followed wasn’t a reckoning. It was a masterclass in character assassination, gaslighting, and media protectionism.
Clinton’s allies mocked these women. Democratic strategists smeared them. Media personalities fell into line, some sneering, some snickering, some pretending it was all just politics.
James Carville, Clinton’s rottweiler-in-chief, famously said of Paula Jones: “Drag a hundred-dollar bill through a trailer park, you never know what you’ll find.”
Imagine any Republican saying that about a woman accusing a president of misconduct today. Even in today’s degraded landscape they’d be tarred and feathered—and rightly so.
But in the 90s, it passed for a punchline. Because it was our guy.
The mainstream press enabled every inch of Clinton’s grotesque conduct.
They crushed Monica Lewinsky. Turned her into a joke. A cartoon. A punchline on Leno and Letterman and SNL. Paula Jones was painted as trailer trash. Willey and Broaddrick were dismissed or ignored.
To this day, major liberal outlets like The New York Times and CNN will barely touch those stories.
There’s no Netflix exposé. No gripping HBO docuseries. No #MeToo reckoning. Because the man at the centre of it all still gets a seat at the table.
He still gives keynote speeches. He still hangs around political conventions like the ghost of liberalism past.
Why? Because he’s part of the club. Because the Clintons are untouchable.
You want to know when Donald Trump’s outside shot at being President became something tangible and real? It wasn’t the “build the wall” rallies. It wasn’t the endless lies or the dog-whistling or the red hats.
It was the night of the second debate—when Trump brought Broaddrick, Jones, and Willey and sat them in the audience.
It was vile. But it was strategically devastating. He blew a hole in the Clinton campaign’s moral superiority and dared the media to explain it away. And he did that because he knew they couldn’t.
Not convincingly. Not honestly.
Because Trump’s people had done their homework.
They understood something that liberal pundits refused to admit: that the defences built for Clinton in the 90s were made of sand, and that the same excuses could now shield Trump. “It’s just sex.” “It’s all politically motivated.” “These women are trying to get rich.”
The left wrote the manual on how to circle the wagons around a sex pest in power. The right just read it back to them. And beat them with it.
The left should never forget, as it bangs the drum for the full disclosure on Epstein that Clinton was a frequent traveller on that plane. The right made the mistake of demanding the release of those documents because it arrogantly assumed that its own would never be caught in the snare ... the left knows better. They know Clinton has questions to answer on that and other things.
But Clinton’s sins weren’t confined to the bedroom.
His presidency was a bonfire of progressive principles. He dismantled welfare. He turbocharged mass incarceration. He sold out the working class with NAFTA. He gutted financial regulation. He gutted the Democratic Party itself.
He turned liberalism into a brand, not a cause. The Third Way became a dead end. His political genius lay in co-opting Republican ideas and selling them with a smile. But the consequences were devastating—and long-lasting.
The 2008 crash? Birthed from deregulation he signed. The rise of right-wing populism? Fed by the economic dislocation of free trade deals. The disillusionment of the left? Cemented by a party that stopped standing for anything except electability.
Bill Clinton didn’t just betray women. He betrayed workers, minorities, the poor, the unions, the planet—and got away with it.
Why is he still lionised? Why does the party still roll him out? Why is he still given any platform, any applause, any dignity?
It’s not just cowardice. It’s complicity.
Clinton still represents something poisonous at the heart of liberalism: the idea that winning justifies everything. That a good economy cancels out bad character. That charisma matters more than conscience. That the “greater good” can be measured in GDP points, not human dignity. Some of the things many have come to despise in the centrist politics of our time, the very things that have emboldened the populists, can be traced to his door.
No cause is ever strengthened by defending the indefensible. No movement is purified by protecting predators.
If the left wants to talk about Trump, Epstein, Weinstein, Cosby, and the long parade of monsters who exploited power and privilege to hurt others, then it cannot keep Clinton out of the conversation. Not if it wants to be taken seriously. Not if it wants to heal.
Because if Clinton were a Republican, every liberal in America would not only know but they would say exactly what he was.
They’d call him a sexual predator. A neoliberal snake oil salesman. A man who hurt the vulnerable and smiled while doing it ... and the time to start saying so, the time for an honest to God reckoning with this, is long past due.
